A leading center for biotechnological science in Russia, a leader in the study of the genetics of industrial microorganisms, including actinomycetes, bacilli, various types of bacteria, and yeast. Creates competitive technologies using methodologies of genetics of pro- and eukaryotic organisms, bioengineering, immunology, bioinformatics, biocatalysis and other modern approaches to solving fundamental and applied problems, production of amino acids, enzymes for various purposes, drugs based on recombinant proteins, antibiotics, vitamins, organic acids and alcohols. It supports and develops the All-Russian collection of industrial microorganisms, numbering over 16,000 different strains.

It includes a collective use center “Identification and assessment of the biotechnological potential of microorganisms.”

Founded (created)

The institute was founded in 1968. In 1994 The Institute was given the status of the State Scientific Center of the Russian Federation, which has been preserved to date by the relevant regulatory acts of the Government of the Russian Federation (1997, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013).

Work in priority areas and critical technologies for the development of science, technology and technology

In 2007-2012. The most important innovative project of national importance “Production of recombinant proteins for medical use based on animal cell cultures and microorganisms using highly efficient technological platforms” was implemented.
