Achievements in Plant and Animal Breeding
The development of the genetic foundations of plant and animal breeding using the latest achievements in physics, chemistry and mathematics is central to the subject of the Institute of Cytology and Genetics.
In order to expedite the solution of this crucial question for science, the employees of our institute made a number of socialist obligations.
As verification showed, obligations are fulfilled successfully.
The new methods that modern genetics can transmit to breeding are primarily the use of heterosis, polyploidy, and the artificial induction of mutations. In the process of a deep theoretical study of these phenomena, we obtain results that can already have a direct impact on increasing the productivity of cultivated plants and domestic animals. Heterosis, the phenomenon of increased power of first-generation hybrids, is now widely used in animal husbandry and crop production. A theoretical study of the essence and cause of heterosis made it possible for the heterosis laboratory of the Institute of Cytology and Genetics to produce highly productive hybrids of the rural direction: Sibirsky-1, Sibirsky-3, Siberian-4, which according to the Goszortoseti in 1961 showed excess yield at all points where the test was conducted from 12 to 35% compared with such highly productive forms as Voronezh-76, Bukovinsky-2 and Dnepropetrovsky-6.
In 1962, production testing of hybrids at 9 points in Siberia is scheduled. This will be attended by the forefront of agriculture TT. Lisichnikov (Chita region) and Kolesnikov (Novosibirsk region). To reduce labor costs in obtaining hybrids, our hybrids are transferred to a sterile basis, one of these hybrids will be submitted to the State variety test in 1962.
